In Gustaf Lundberg’s portrait of Fredrik Axel von Fersen, only the chestplate and buttonhole badge of the Royal Order of the Sword show that he was a high-ranking soldier. He had just left service as a French major general, in a regiment he recruited personally. For the facial colouring, the artist has used differing pastel shades side-by-side. Reflections and spots of light are clearly defined, and the blue coat has an impasto, opaque character.
