The Roman prefect Pontius Pilate sentenced Jesus to death by crucifixion. This central event in the biblical story of Jesus is depicted here as a colourful spectacle. People have gathered on Golgotha. John supports the Virgin Mary, who has collapsed in grief. The rocky ground, the clouds in the sky and the imaginary landscape stretching to infinity are represented with the depth and lustre of oil painting. The work belonged to the royal collections at Gripsholm Castle as early as 1547.
