The painting is a so-called world landscape, a freely composed panorama, common in Northern European painting of the 1500s. In the distance, an imaginary depiction of Rome appears. The historian Titus Livius tells that Publius Horatius Cocles was an officer of the Roman Republic, who managed to defend Rome from the Etruscan king Lars Porsenna at the Pons Sublicius bridge.
