Lancret was perhaps the second most prominent painter of fêtes galantes after Watteau. They had both studied under Claude Gillot. As in Watteau’s, the people in Lancret’s works pursue merry delights in dreamlike gardens. Often these are frankly childish, such as swings. But the games could also take on an erotic undertone. Interplay between the figures was crucial, and several of the artist’s studies for this are extant.
