Accompanied by elves riding in their wagon drawn by two cats, Freyja seeks out her husband who has disappeared. Freyja is best known as the goddess of love. On the stave that she is holding in her hand there is a runic inscription: “Blommér painted this in Rome 1852”. The artist created the painting in Italy where he had studied the Renaissance master Raphael is evident, not least, in his interpretation of the goddess of love which is reminiscent of a classical portrayal of the Madonna.
