“You expect the woman to start singing!” The painting was perceived to be so natural that several in the audience are said to have exclaimed this when it was exhibited. Lerolle was a key person in the circle around Edgar Degas and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and often painted scenes from the modern city. When told that the right part of the picture gave the impression of being empty, he replied that it was reserved for the sound of the song.
