Hilleström was one of the most productive Swedish artists of the 18th century, above all as a genre painter. Most of his subjects are drawn from domestic interiors, but he also painted images of festivities and spectacles at court. A good number of self-portraits are known, but this is perhaps his most restrained and informal one, with no attributes to indicate that Hilleström was an artist.
