The nursing Virgin Mary is based on a Byzantine icon, but also on the direct observance of a mother with her baby. Everyday intimacy is coupled with Christian symbolism through details that inspire meditation on the human existence, death and resurrection of Jesus – the apple, the swaddling cloth, the grapes, and Mary’s red cloak. The powerfully modelled figures are influenced by Italian art, combined with a Northern European fantasy landscape.
