The portrait shows the ideal described in the Italian humanist Baldassar Castiglione’s book, Il libro del cortegiano, (The Courtier, 1528). A man should be elegant, educated and also conscious about power. This unknown gentleman is depicted in garb of precious materials and a modern cut. His face is vigilant. His right hand rests on the hilt of his rapier, ready to immediately draw the weapon.
