Martin Meytens’s background as a miniaturist laid the foundations for his skilful portrait painting, full of lace, billowing velvet and exclusive fashion details. He grew up in a family with Dutch roots in Stockholm. Following studies in Venice and London, he embarked on a career as a court painter in Vienna. There he was also appointed director of the Academy of Fine Arts.
