Hildegard Thorell studied for several of the greatest French artists of the day. She became one of the most successful portraitists of her generation and exhibited at the Salon in Paris. This painting should probably not be viewed as a portrait but as a depiction of sorrow represented by the woman in mourning. This was a popular motif among artists in the late 19th century.
