Une première was shown at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris where it was a great success. It earned a major breakthrough for the artist who painted the subject in several versions. Later he sought to revise this particular version but remained dissatisfied and tore it up. The sculptor Christian Eriksson saved it by gluing the pieces together.
