After Queen Christina had abdicated in the summer of 1654, she travelled first to the Spanish Netherlands. There she spent a year in Antwerp and Brussels, cities with dynamic art markets and large collections. The queen commissioned this portrait – several copies of it in fact – from Justus van Egmont, a painter who had worked in the studio of Rubens. Christina is shown as the ancient virgin goddess Minerva, patron of wisdom and war.
