British Empire Exhibition, 1924. April - October. Scenes of Empire, Series No. P32
The British Empire Exhibition opened on 23 April 1924 (appropriately and deliberately, St George's Day, the patron saint of England). Mounted on a single 216-acre site at Wembley, in north-west London, it was intended to represent the whole Empire, encourage unity and promote Imperial trade with its displays of people, industry and colonial commodities. When it closed in 1925, the Exhibition had attracted more than 27 million visitors. This colour-lithograph poster shows the harvesting of melons and bananas, probably in the British Caribbean.
