Gallery label
"Faustin" (pseudonym of Faustin Betbeder) (born 1847) Félix Pyat was the most obstreperous and the least effective of the members of the Commune. Despised by Delescluz for the fuzziness of his political ideas, he was always to be found at the centre of any squabble in the Hôtel de Ville and on several occasions petulantly handed in his resignation, which he later rescinded. Here carrying a sack bearing the names of other communard leaders he leaps into the 'Four à Brioche', (meaning equally a ‘bread oven’ or a ‘furnace of blunders’) in which the Commune is baking, exclaiming ‘Now for another cook-up …’ Lithograph, coloured by hand.
