Description:
Alexander Monro Primus was distinguished not so much by his great medical discoveries as by the scrupulousness of his observation. In 1726 he published his major work, 'The Anatomy of the Human Bones'. In the second (1732) and later editions there is added 'An Anatomical Treatise of the Nerves, and Account of the Reciprocal Motions of the Heart and a Description of the Human Lacteal Sac and Duct'. The work continued to be reprinted as late as 1828, by which time it had gone through nineteen English editions and appeared in several translations. Monro also published on a whole range of topics in 'Medical Essays', a forerunner of the modern medical journal. Monro studied drawing himself to perfect his own analysis and record of dissections that he performed and also set up drawing classes for his students with the engraver Richard Cooper. He evidently worked closely with Cooper and the illustration shown here, to an essay by Monro on the lower jaw, is not only engraved by Cooper, but signed by him with in addition to the conventional 'del. et sculp.' of the phrase 'ad vivam', from the life. Though the subject is plainly dead, the intention is clearly to demonstrate that Monro's observations were first hand, not borrowed from others.
