Description:
Vesalius's 'De Humani Corporis' was reprinted over a period of more than two hundred years in many different forms, in several different languages and with a variety of different texts to the plates. Edinburgh University Library has a number of editions of the book. This one was printed in Leyden in 1725, edited by the great Dutch doctor Hermann Boerhaave. The Universities of Edinburgh and Leyden were closely linked, particularly at this time and in the field of medicine. The plates for this edition were recut on copper and we show the frontispiece with its scene of a public dissection in an anatomy theatre engraved by Jan Wandelaar.
