Description:
The Celtic Psalter has no known provenance before the 16th century when it was in Aberdeen, however Professor W. M. Lindsay dated the writing to the eleventh century. Parts of the end of the book are now missing, and were missing prior to its rebinding in 1914. The earliest entry is written in Irish-miniscule on vellum with later entries added in the fourteenth century. The text is decorated with large and small initials, some line endings, a few scrolls in the lower margins, and only two pages of full illuminations. Initials are filled in with purple, greem, blue, yellow, or red, and some pslam initials have fine interlaced designs with the terminals frequently being animal heads. The margins of the book are badly cropped and all catchwords are missing.
