About this work

Description

Captain Templer, the artist, was one of three men involved in an accident involving the balloon 'Saladin', whilst taking meteorological observations, in December 1881. Templer and Arthur Agg-Gardiner were thrown clear of the balloon when it crash-landed at Bridport, but the third man, Walter Powell, M.P. for Malmesbury, was trapped on board, the balloon flew off, and Powell was never seen again
