The pose of the skeleton is based on that of the first skeleton plate in Andreas Vesalius's De humani corporis fabrica, Basel 1543. The Vesalian skeleton is seen from the front (see this catalogue 26157) whereas, for this plate, he is viewed as if seen from the back
