About this work

Description

Described by the artist as "The three familiars, Pierrot, Harlequin and Punchinello, ready for the great coup. The family skeleton comes out, bony and bedizened, with mincing steps and ghastly leer. The adroit Punchinello stands with baton poised to deliver the blow, unexpected and crushing, which will beat into rags and dust the grinning image of old folly" (Clark, pp. 27-28)
