The garret in which Béranger lived at the age of twenty on the sixth floor of a building on the Boulevard Saint-Martin in Paris, and recalled in his poem 'Le grenier', in which he imagines himself revisiting the room much later: "Lisette ici doit surtout apparaître, / Vive, jolie, avec un frais chapeau : / Déjà sa main à l'étroite fenêtre / Suspend son schall en guise de rideau." Lisette's hat, mentioned in the poem, rests on the bed. Around the central scene are vignettes of Béranger and Lisette looking out over Paris from the open mansard window, and the older Béranger revisiting the building.
