Lettering

The first English hospital in Beira. Drawn by F.C. Dickinson. Some of the staff. A group of patients. From photographs by Mrs. Elise Watts ... Published description attached to the drawing: "A correspondent writes:- The Lady Superintendent Mrs Goodman who was right through the siege of Ladysmith where she did invaluable work amongst soldiers and civilians, and nursed Dr Jameson through his serious illness, came to Beira as the pioneer nurse to open the first English hospital there … has only been opened a few months, it is in perfect order and every berth occupied. During this short space of time a large number of fever patients have been treated … a small percentage of deaths has occurred, the others having been discharged well. The hospital is supported entirely by the Beira and Mashonaland railway company of which Mr Charles Wibberley is the General Manager. Mrs. Goodman is shown in our illustration holding a monkey"
