About this work

Description

The image refers to Matthew 6.1-4: the man is not ostentatious in his charity and "sound[s] no trumpet before [him], as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets". This latter we can see happening in the distance: a man standing above a jostling throng blows a trumpet while another man also at his level throws things into the mob. Behind is a stately house; people watch from the windows
